Pope says the crucifix is not a fashion statement

-

The crucifix is not a fashion accessory, the Pope has said, in what is thought to be the first modern intervention by the head of the Catholic Church on its misuse.

Pope Francis said the symbol was a religious sign to be contemplated and understood – “not to be abused”.

Speaking in St Peter’s Square, he said: “The image of Jesus crucified reveals the mystery of the death of the Son as the supreme act of love.”

His comments echo those made by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 2013, when Justin Welby said using the symbol as a fashion accessory was like wearing a tiny golden gallows or electric chair.
