Victoria Derbyshire is brave to share – I wouldn’t dare to bare

-

All praise to Victoria Derbyshire for agreeing to appear on an upcoming ITV show in which women who have had breast cancer take off their clothes to dispel fears about life after surgery.

The BBC presenter had a right-hand mastectomy and reconstruction on her breast after she was diagnosed with stage two breast cancer in 2015. She has shown courage sharing her experience with frankness and humour.

But, oh dear, what is this? Victoria tells Radio Times that she walks around naked at home in front of her sons, aged 11 and 13, as she doesn’t have “body issues”. She may not, but what about the poor boys?

“They don’t bat an eyelid,” she says, “Of course they don’t. I’m their mum.”

Hmm. I can just imagine the Boy’s reaction if I appeared nude on the stairs. “Ugh, put it away, Mum!” He finds the sight of the razor and feminine paraphernalia by my bath quite traumatic enough.

As I am Welsh, I was basically brought up to avoid showing my naked self to me, let alone anyone else. That whole Scandinavian strolling around with your bits dangling makes me shudder. I can’t help thinking Victoria Derbyshire’s sons might agree.
