Gay spoof of Pence rabbit book outsells original

- By Helena Horton

JOHN OLIVER has succeeded in lampooning Mike Pence with a spoof book about the US vice-president’s family rabbit, which has outsold the original.

The British satirist, who hosts the US TV show Last Week Tonight, took the children’s story about the Pences’ pet, named Marlon Bundo, and made the rabbit gay, mocking Mr Pence’s conservative views on homosexuality.

Oliver published A Day in the Life of Marlon Bundo the day before the release of Marlon Bundo’s A Day in the Life of the Vice President, written by Charlotte Pence, Mr Pence’s daughter, and the spoof version has managed to outsell the original on Amazon.

The proceeds from both books are being donated to charities. Miss Pence, 24, said she had bought a copy of Oliver’s retelling. She told Fox Business: “We have two books that are giving to charities, that are both about bunnies, so I’m all for it, really.”

Mr Pence, however, has not commented. He said in 2006 that gay marriage would lead to the “deterioration of the family” and “societal collapse”.
