Migrant who murdered teenager jailed for life

An asylum seeker claiming to be from Afghanistan has been jailed for life for the rape and murder of a student in Germany that stoked a backlash against Angela Merkel’s immigration policy.

Hussein Khavari, of unknown age and origin, attacked Maria Ladenburger, 19, in October 2016, in Freiburg, choking and repeatedly raping her before leaving her to drown in a river.

Social media users subsequently posted sarcastic “thank you” messages to the German chancellor.
