Old drivers’ hire cars
SIR – You report that both the AA and RAC consider older drivers to be safer than some younger ones (report, March 22).
I hope this resonates with carhire companies, which have made it virtually impossible for older motorists to hire a car. Marcus Croome

SIR – Janice Dorn (Letters, March 10) is quite right to advocate a skid pan course for all learner drivers. As a driving instructor I recommend the course to all my pupils – regrettably, hardly any listen.
Most pupils require practice to acquire and perfect a driving skill, but instructors are only required to discuss skid control, not practise it, as it is impractical to try on public roads.
So most youngsters who experience a skid have never practised for it and mess it up. Most will be lucky and merely write their car off. For the unlucky few, it will be fatal. Jeremy Bateman
