SIR – I am not sure that knitting (Letters, March 20) is always as calming as some of your correspondents think.

When I used to commute into central London on the Underground, I frequently observed how the knitting actions of my female fellow passengers grew increasingly frantic as they desperately tried to finish a row before the train arrived in their Station. Philip Jarrett
