SIR – I am not sure that knitting (Letters, March 20) is always as calming as some of your correspond­ents think.

When I used to commute into central London on the Undergroun­d, I frequently observed how the knitting actions of my female fellow passengers grew increasing­ly frantic as they desperatel­y tried to finish a row before the train arrived in their Station. Philip Jarrett
