sir – When I was a young police constable on night duty, I and a colleague would stand some distance apart and he would indicate to me if a vehicle travelling in my direction was missing a rear light (Letters, March 27).
I would signal to the driver to stop and, after approaching from the front of the vehicle, would explain why I had done so. As well as convincing the driver that I had psychic powers, this was a way to detect other offences. John Davenport
