Train leap victims died following final embrace

♦ A man and a woman have died after leaping in front of a train while they were embracing.

Witnesses said the pair were holding each other close before they jumped in front of the train at around 8.20pm on Tuesday at Doncaster station. British Transport Police said: “Sadly two people were pronounced dead at the scene.”

Officers will work to establish the pair’s identities and inform their next of kin. An investigation into how they came to be on the track has begun and a report will be prepared for the coroner.

A Virgin Trains spokesman wrote on Twitter: “My heart is broken for all involved in this tragic incident. Services are returning to normal but so much pain will remain. If you have been affected by tonight’s events, please talk to the Samaritans.”
