1947 – Secretly travelled to Moscow for meeting with Stalin.

1961 – Returned to Moscow to meet Nikita Khrushchev, the general secretary. 1965 – Attended conference of Asian and African countries in Indonesia. 1984 – Railway tour of Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc countries including Poland, East Germany, Czechoslov­akia, Hungary, Yugoslavia and Bulgaria. 1990 – Clandestin­e visit to China to discuss warming relations between South Korea and the Soviet Union.

2000 – Travelled to Beijing before the start of an inter-korean summit. 2001 – Visit to Russia. 2006 – Eight-day trip to Beijing. 2010 – Travelled to Beijing for talks with Hu Jintao, then president. 2011 – Two separate journeys to China, the first in May and again in August. 2011 – August meeting with Dmitry Medvedev, then president, in eastern Russia.
