Blue passports become the butt of EU’S April Fool’s joke

- By Helena Horton

THE European Parliament mocked the UK in its April Fool’s joke, claiming that all EU passports will become dark blue.

These would match the blue passports that will be issued postbrexit and are seen by many as a symbol of our impending exit from the EU.

The UK office of the European Parliament tweeted that all EU passports would change to “strengthen the feeling among nationals that they belong to the same community”.

Scottish Labour MP Ged Killen said the tweet was “top trolling”.

The contract to make Britain’s new passports was awarded to Francodutch firm Gemalto.

Eurosceptics have described the move as a “national humiliation”, saying ministers fail to understand the importance of ensuring British passports are made in Britain.
