Bridge to the future

An allfemale group of Iraqi archaeologists trained by the British Museum will be responsible for the preservation and restoration of the world’s oldest known bridge. The Tello bridge in the south of Iraq, a Sumerian structure, was built in the third millennium BC and rediscovered in 1929. It has been earmarked for conservation as part of a project to stabilise and potentially rebuild sites ravaged by jihadists.
