Commonwealth Games: Opening Ceremony 2018 & Commonwealth Games Live

BBC ONE, 10.30AM & FROM 12.15AM; WALES, 12.40AM

The 21st Commonwealth Games comes from Australia’s Gold Coast City and is perhaps the only major multi-sport championships where England (not Great Britain, of course) stands a fair chance of topping the medals table.

Hazel Irvine presents live coverage of the opening ceremony from the Carrara Stadium, which will feature the Parade of Nations, Competitors’ Oath and finale of the Queen’s Baton Relay. There are also highlights on BBC Two at 7.00pm, if you miss it.

Later on comes the first of the sporting action, introduced by JJ Chalmers. In spite of the inhospitable hour, it ought to be worth staying up to see whether Alistair Brownlee will make it two titles in a row in the men’s triathlon. Alistair will compete alongside his brother, two-time world champion, Jonny. England’s Vicky Holland, meanwhile, takes part in the women’s event.

In the swimming pool, expect Scotland’s Hannah Miley to be in the mix in the 400m individual medley, while Scotland and Wales will both feature in women’s hockey. Needless to say, the coverage online and via the red button will be comprehensive. Gabriel Tate entitlement puts off his potential conquests in Tom Rob Smith’s superb docudrama. GT Save Me SKY ATLANTIC, 9.00PM

 Lennie James’s excellent drama series comes to an end with an emotional episode. Having discovered who had coerced his estranged daughter Jody into leaving home, Nelly (James) stages a fraught lock-in at the Palm Tree pub to get some answers. GT The Americans ITV4, 10.00PM

 The sixth and, sadly, final series of this US import begins with Russian spy Elizabeth (Keri Russell) facing a severe test and her husband Philip (Matthew Rhys) entertaining an unexpected guest. GT Entertainment First Dates CHANNEL 4, 10.00PM  It’s 10 series old, and yet First Dates still feels fresh and seductive. In this episode there is a first for the show, as an estranged couple arrive together, hoping to support each other in their search for new partners. GT
