Carry On Up the Khyber (1968) ITV3, 4.10PM ★★★
One of the best Carry Ons features a typically silly plot (something about whether the Third Foot and Mouth regiment, stationed in 1890s India, wear anything under their kilts) and a terrific mob of dubious characters, including the Khasi of Kalabar (Kenneth Williams), Sir Sidney Ruff-diamond (Sid James) and Private Widdle (Charles Hawtrey). Carry on Camping is on Thursday at 4.15pm. (2017) SKY CINEMA PREMIERE, 6.10PM ★★★★
Pixar gives Lightning Mcqueen (Owen Wilson) a sweet, surprisingly profound victory lap in which the fading champion of the racing circuit is bustled back to boot camp. Written and directed by Dave Mullins, it’s ingeniously animated and springs from an astute and precise observation of human nature: the only way to defeat our demons is to dismantle them in good faith, piece by piece. FILM4, 6.50PM ★★★★ (2013)
Asa Butterfield gives an intrepid and complex performance as Ender Wiggin, brightest fledgling in a boot camp, where he and other youngsters prepare to save humanity by honing their skills in a series of strategic war games. It’s refreshingly ideas-driven and forces you to grapple with the issue of war-as-video game without ever overemphasising it. Plus, there’s Ben Kingsley sporting a Maori accent.
