Wild beaver is first to be killed by car in Britain
A wild beaver is believed to have become the first to be killed by a car in Britain.
The Devon Wildlife Trust said the animal – among the first found in England in 400 years – had been run over after escaping on to the road during floods. It was discovered close to the River Otter, where a beaver re-introduction and monitoring project is being carried out.
Steve Hussey, from the trust, said: “Recent heavy rains and high river levels may have meant that this beaver chose a land route rather than battle against the force of the river.”
