Disappearing deeds

SIR – My house is, in parts, more than 500 years old. I glimpsed the deeds when we bought it in the Nineties.

I was very put out when I paid off my mortgage to discover that the deeds – fascinating historical documents – no longer existed, as they had been “dematerialised”, according to the mortgage lender. Is anyone else peeved by this wanton destruction?
