Mariah Carey reveals her bipolar disorder

Mariah Carey has revealed she suffers from bipolar disorder. The singer told People magazine she “didn’t want to believe it” after she was formally diagnosed with type-two bipolar, also referred to as bipolar II, following a mental breakdown in 2001.

Carey is now in therapy and taking medication. One thing which held her back from getting treatment earlier, she said, was the fear of publicity.

“I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she explained. “I simply couldn’t do that any more. i refuse to allow it to define me or control me.”
