Thornberry calls on May to apologise for Thatcher’s acts
TWO senior Labour frontbenchers have been accused of trying to “politicise” the Commonwealth after claiming Prince Charles should not be the next head of the group of nations and calling on Theresa May to apologise for Britain’s historic wrongdoings.
Emily Thornberry, the shadow foreign secretary, said the Prime Minister should use next week’s Commonwealth summit to say sorry “for the actions of Margaret Thatcher in the Eighties”.
Meanwhile, Kate Osamor, the shadow international development secretary, claimed Prince Charles should not succeed the Queen as the Commonwealth’s figurehead because he had “not been that vocal on issues”.
Tory MPS urged Mrs May to “disregard” the comments.
Andrew Rosindell, the Tory MP for Romford, said: “We are holding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting and it is a very important week for Britain. The last thing we want is MPS trying to create political problems.”
