What to look for on your racecard
Name, age and weight that has to be carried
The weight is determined by an official assessment of past form. The prime age is considered to be 9, 10 or 11.
Money won
This is a career figure won in Great Britain and Ireland. The total figure is shown and, in brackets, this season’s tally. Special note should be made of this year’s tally. This year, Carlingford Lough is the top money-earner in the field but has only won £1,700 this season.
Win ratio
The percentage of wins to runs. Most National winners in recent times have had a ratio of more than 30 per cent.
Rating
The Telegraph’s assessment of ability. Look for a performance figure of at least 150.
Falls
The number of times the horse has fallen, unseated its rider or been brought down in its career. Favour horses that have fallen at least once – they have learned a lesson – but fewer than three times.
Wins at 3 miles plus
A potential winner needs proven stamina.
