Super 8 (2011) FILM4, 6.35PM ★★★★

 JJ Abrams, with help from his idol Steven Spielberg as producer, coasts on nostalgia for films such as Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Goonies and E.T. with this enjoyably reverential update of the Eighties children’s caper. There’s a perfect blend of sentiment and spectacle as a gang of Ohio kids (Joel Courtney, Elle Fanning) witness a train crash while making a zombie film. Kyle Chandler co-stars.

Rambo III (1988) ITV4, 9.00PM ★★

 Sylvester Stallone reprises his role as Vietnam War veteran John Rambo for a third time – with diminishing returns. This time, Rambo is sticking it to the Commies, as he rescues his friend Col Trautman (Richard Crenna) from Soviet forces in Peshawar, Pakistan. The most notable aspect of the film is its then-world record breaking body count – excellently spoofed by

Hot Shots: Part Deux.

Se7en (1995) TCM, 9.00PM ★★★★★

 Gluttony, avarice, envy, sloth, wrath, lust and pride: the seven deadly sins are explored graphically, and imaginatively, in this gloomy thriller from director David Fincher. It follows a detective (an outstanding Morgan Freeman) and his rookie partner (Brad Pitt) on the hunt for a maniac who kills those guilty of the vices. It’s brutal and gripping, with an ending you won’t forget in a hurry. Gwyneth Paltrow and Kevin Spacey co-star.
