Cameron urges Third World to shun handouts

-

David Cameron has warned developing nations that they must raise their own taxes and stop being so dependent on foreign aid handouts.

The former prime minister said that governments needed to develop their own “legitimate sources of revenue” as he raised concerns that some nations were only raising between 5 and

10 per cent of their income in taxes.

Mr Cameron told an event at Chatham House: “We made a promise to the poorest people in the world… we will continue to support you, but you know and we know that if you’re not building the systems for collecting taxes, then you cannot expect the world to keep on paying you forever.”
