The Man Who Buries Planes
RADIO 4, 11.30AM
This is an edgy, energetic look at the process of British contemporary artist Roger Hiorns, who buries aeroplanes in the ground. The idea behind the project is to ground something that should be in the air, making us examine our own sense of claustrophobia and anxiety about flying in planes, but there are other reasons too. Hiorns calls his work “a gesture towards changing the status quo”. Regardless of whether or not you think he succeeds, this is a jolting and strangely seductive piece of radio.
