Testing teachers

SIR – Michael Rosen, the children’s author, has described testing fouryear-olds as “madness” (Arts, April 18).

Testing teachers, however, is not. Without an assessment of a child’s ability at the start of their schooling, how can we tell what difference the teachers have made? Chris Sermon
