SIR – Tomorrow marks the 100th anniversar­y of the death of Manfred von Richthofen, also known as the “Red Baron”.

It is disputed as to whether he was shot down and killed by Roy Brown, of No 209 Squadron RAF, or by anti-aircraft fire from an Australian battery. What is not in dispute, however, is that he was the most successful fighter ace of the First World War and a great tactician in aviation warfare.

He was greatly respected by his opponents in the RAF and RFC. Michael Foster
