Second referendum We might back it, says Mcdonnell
Labour could support a second Brexit referendum, the party’s shadow chancellor said.
John Mcdonnell claimed his party had not ruled out a second EU vote, just days after a major new campaign calling for another vote was launched.
It came after Jeremy Corbyn sacked Owen Smith, shadow Northern Ireland spokesman, last month after he called for a second referendum on leaving the union. Mr Mcdonnell, one of the leader’s most senior allies, said Labour was “walking a tightrope” over its Brexit position.
Asked about a second Brexit vote, he said: “We’re not opposed to any form of democratic engagement. We’ve not ruled anything out.”
But he added: “My preference is not another referendum, but a general election.”
