New signings Marc Overmars and Emmanuel Petit helped secure Wenger’s first title and then the FA Cup, the club’s first double since 1971.

Robert Pires and Sylvain Wiltord arrived but Overmars and Petit left and without them Arsenal were second again and lost the FA Cup final to Liverpool.

Sol Campbell arrived on a free transfer from Tottenham and Arsenal reclaimed the title and did the double again, beating United at Old Trafford to win the league.

With Tony Adams retired, Vieira became captain and Gilberto Silva also arrived. Arsenal could not defend the title but did win the FA Cup after beating Southampto­n.

The ‘Invincible­s’ season – the first unbeaten English campaign since Preston in 1888-89 – but a tilt at the Champions League ended in the last eight to Chelsea.

Arsenal’s unbeaten run ended at 49 in the infamous ‘Battle of the Buffet’ at Old Trafford. Chelsea won the title, but Arsenal beat United in the FA Cup final.

Vieira’s exit led to a meek fourth-placed finish in Highbury’s final season. But the season will be remembered for the 2-1 Champions League final defeat to Barca.

Arsenal were in their first season in their new 60,000-seater Emirates Stadium, but they laboured to fourth, and were denied silverware by Chelsea in the League Cup.

Arsenal looked sure to end their title drought, going five points clear in February, but Eduardo da Silva’s broken leg at Birmingham prompted a slump.

Wenger signed Samir Nasri and Mikael Silvestre, but Arsenal could do no better than fourth, and lost in the FA Cup and Champions League semi-finals.

Another tough summer saw Van Persie join United and Alex Song move to Barcelona. Arsenal just edged out Spurs for a Champions League place.

2013-14

Wenger spent £42.5m on Mesut Ozil but they were poor in the league – losing 6-0 at Chelsea in his 1,000th match. They did end the trophy drought by beating Hull.

2014-15

Alexis Sanchez arrived in a £30m deal, but Arsenal failed to challenge for the title. The FA Cup was won for the second time in succession, with Villa thumped 4-0.

2015-16

Signing Petr Cech was supposed to provide the missing piece in Arsenal’s title jigsaw, but instead they were edged out by surprise package Leicester.

2016-17

Fans turned during a defeat at Crystal Palace as Arsenal fell out of the top four for the first time under Wenger. But again the FA Cup was won, this time against Chelsea.
