This is no time to let a sleepy dad lie

Caught napping? Prince William at Westminster Abbey two days after the birth of his third child, inset, and with the Duchess and new baby, top

After the bizarre Mumsnet backlash against the Duchess of Cambridge for her “excessively glamorous” postnatal appearance on the steps of the Lindo Wing, we now have pictures of William nodding off at the Anzac Day ceremony in Westminster Abbey to balance things out.

His sleepiness raises so many questions. To start with: why hasn’t the second in line to the throne taken himself off to a different wing – a spare one in the palace – to get a decent night’s kip?

What’s the Norland nanny up to while the new baby is feeding, mewling and puking through the small hours?

She’s trained to swaddle and wind under combat conditions, for pity’s sake! Unlike weedy, yawning husbands, these crack professionals can go for months at a time without shutting their eyes or needing the loo. So legend has it.

I’m inclined to suspect that Kate, like every new mother, has deliberately insisted that William stay in the marital bed, no matter how useless he might be when deprived of sleep. Just to make her point.

That his very public exhaustion plays so well with the chippy Mumsnet set is just an added bonus.
