DJ faces jail after trying to defraud NHS of £800,000
A YOUTUBE DJ who tried to win £800,000 in damages from a hospital faces jail after being caught out in a legal first.
Sandip Singh Atwal, 33, from Huddersfield, exaggerated the effect of comparatively minor injuries in an attempt to defraud the NHS.
He went to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary in June 2008 after being attacked with a baseball bat.
The hospital’s trust had previously admitted that his injuries were negligently treated and offered £30,000 to settle the case.
Mr Atwal instead asked for £837,109 on the basis he was unable to work. But the trust, suspicious of his claims, commissioned video surveillance which showed Mr Atwal working as a courier.
His social media also showed that his activities as a professional DJ continued unabated.
At the High Court yesterday, Mr Justice Spencer ruled that 14 allegations of contempt relating to false statements had been proved. Atwal is due for sentencing on June 1, with the maximum jail term being two years.
