Never walk alone
SIR – I sympathise with Jan Etherington (Comment, April 26) in her frustration with slow walkers.
My wife and I have hiked in many European and South American countries over the years, and she insists on taking pictures or admiring the many interesting features along whatever route we are embarked on. I, by contrast, gain most satisfaction and health benefit from “legging it” as quickly as is comfortable.
I have, however, discovered the perfect solution to this predicament. Every 15 minutes or so, and having established a commanding lead over my dear wife, I simply retrace my tracks to a position roughly 100 yards behind hers and then turn round and catch her up.
Result: I cover vastly more mileage than she does and we always end the walk together. Bliss. Chris Stokes
