A 50,000 a year, a total of 450,000 over nine years.

Q If I missed a screening, what is my risk of having cancer?

A For over-70s screening picks up cancer in 1.4 women in 100. For people aged between 65 and 70 it is found in 1.2 women in 100.

Q How many cases of cancer may have been missed?

A Around 6,000, if all women took up the offer for screening

Q How many women are screened each year?

A 2.2million women aged 45 and over

Q How many cancers does annual screening pick up?

A Around 18,400.

Q How will I know if I have been affected?

A Letters will be sent to all who missed screenings by May 31.

A The Department of Health has estimated that up to 270 women have died.
