Released one day short of the 27th anniversary of Ian Curtis’s suicide, Anton Corbijn’s homage to the troubled Joy Division frontman is superbly researched and exquisitely executed in black and white. Starring Sam Riley

(his first time in a lead role) and Samantha Morton, the film charts Curtis’s rise to fame, his battle with epilepsy, and his eventual demise. It’s a beautiful, but extremely sad tale.
