Mozambique peace plea after rebel leader’s death
Mozambique’s president said the country’s fragile peace process must not collapse after Afonso Dhlakama, the veteran rebel leader who had opened talks with the government, died unexpectedly aged 65.
Filipe Nyusi hailed Mr Dhlakama as “a citizen who always worked for Mozambique”. He said: “He did everything so that there would be peace.” Sources say he died after a heart attack, following diabetes. Mr Dhlakama led Renamo, a rebel group that fought a 16-year civil war before emerging as an opposition party.
