To do today: have birthday, retire, win lotto

- By Nick Allen in Washington

A CANADIAN man celebrated his birthday, retired from work and won £1.1 million on the lottery all on the same day.

Ping Kuen Shum’s hat-trick of good fortune happened on April 28, when he timed his final day of work in Vancouver to coincide with his birthday. He also bought a lottery ticket while in a shopping centre in Richmond, British Columbia.

When the provincial lottery was drawn that night, all six of his numbers – 9, 12, 13, 18, 21 and 29 – came up, giving him the whole jackpot. The chances of him doing so were 14 million to one, according to the lottery organisers.

Mr Ping celebrated his birthday, newfound wealth and retirement by taking his family out for dinner. He said: “It’s unbelievable that all three events happened on the same day...i have worked hard for so many years and I’m looking forward to sharing this fortune with my family.”

Mr Ping said he would also like to organise a holiday to China.

The British Columbia Lottery Corporation, which revealed the events, did not disclose Mr Ping’s age or former occupation.
