sir – Congratula­tions to Elizabeth Brimmell of Somerset (Letters, April 28) on getting her bank to drop from her address the hated county of Avon, an administra­tive authority that was abolished in 1996.

Here in north Somerset we have been trying for the past 20 years to get the Post Office to move with the times and change its database. Despite appealing to everyone we could think of, even our MP, nothing changes. Elfan Ap Rees Locking, Somerset

sir – Some years ago, I asked Royal Mail what relevance counties had in postal deliveries. The email reply was that they were irrelevant – a postcode being all that is necessary. Raymond Barry Laytham, East Yorkshire
