SIR – John Lavender (Letters, May 8) asks why the drivers of diesel vehicles leave their engines running.

Many new vehicles automatica­lly stop their engines when stationary, in part to meet emissions regulation­s. This is one more reason to replace older petrol and diesel vehicles with modern, cleaner alternativ­es.

The uncertaint­y over diesel created by the Government hasn’t helped. Tim Banks
