Engines running

SIR – John Lavender (Letters, May 8) asks why the drivers of diesel vehicles leave their engines running.

Many new vehicles automatically stop their engines when stationary, in part to meet emissions regulations. This is one more reason to replace older petrol and diesel vehicles with modern, cleaner alternatives.
