SIR – When John Bercow, the present Commons Speaker, was in my class at the age of 10, I ran a mock election that introduced him to politics (Comment, May 8).

John was rewarding to teach, intelligent, challenging and occasionally pugnacious. But he was never a bully. John Stringer
