Value of a free press
SIR – A free press is a bulwark of democracy, to be defended at all times.
If a newspaper makes false claims, it should expect to face legal action. However, it would be totally unjust if any newspaper facing court action over any matter had to bear the cost, regardless of whether its story was true or not (report, May 10). If someone sues a newspaper for damages and the paper is proved correct, why should the claimant escape the cost? This just encourages vexatious claims trying to prevent investigative journalism.
MPS need to realise that they cannot act with impunity, and choosing to go into public office is likely to bring with it scrutiny from the media.
