Steven Spielberg’s vision of the Normandy invasion won Oscars galore. Starring Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, it chronicles a GI squad who have been ordered to track down Private Ryan (Damon), so that he can return home to his mother who is grieving for her three other sons. The opening, which depicts the Omaha Beach assault, provides some of the most visceral battle scenes in cinema.
