US ruling overturns law against sports betting

The United States supreme court yesterday ruled against a federal law that prevents gambling on football, basketball, baseball and other sports in most states.

The decision gives the go-ahead for states to legalise betting on sport, providing Congress does not now pass a law banning the move.

One research firm estimated before the ruling that 32 states were likely to offer sports betting within five years if the ban was lifted.
