England fans told not to put flags on Russian landmarks
POLICE are warning England’s fans not to drape flags over “sensitive” Russian landmarks during the World Cup.
A list of sites in Volgograd – formerly Stalingrad – is being drawn up by the Russian authorities and will be given to supporters by British police.
England’s opening World Cup game is on June 18 in the city that more than any other symbolises Russian patriotism. Police say fans must take care with flags as they can “cause antagonism”.
Police also revealed that just 1,460 tickets have been sold by the FA for the game against Tunisia, suggesting some may have been put off by the tensions between Russia and the UK.
Fans have also been warned not to connect to hotel Wi-fi or leave smartphones or tablets in safes over fears of hacking. The National Cyber Security Centre advises setting up extra email protections and avoiding internet banking prior to the tournament.
