Prison sentence for Russian protest leader
Alexei Navalny, leader of the Russian opposition, was sentenced to 30 days in jail yesterday for staging an unsanctioned protest against President Vladimir Putin’s inauguration.
Navalny organised a series of demonstrations across the country on May 5 under the slogan “He is not our czar”.
Moscow’s Tverskoy District Court convicted Navalny on charges of organising an unauthorised rally.
The anti-corruption campaigner, who has become Mr Putin’s most visible foe, has previously served several short jail terms for organising protests.
