Betrayal of Brexit will spur a popular political movement against the EU

-

SIR – If the EU and the British establishment succeed in keeping the United Kingdom inside, joined to, or governed by this anti-free trade, outdated and undemocratic institution, they are even more arrogant and, dare I say, stupid than many of us already suppose.

A political campaign to extricate Britain fully from the EU will begin on the day following any such betrayal. It will be broader-based, better-funded and more determined than any previous domestic political movement.

The calm, free-spirited and unyielding determination of the British people, will, if required, eventually succeed in honouring this nation’s decision to leave the EU fully.

SIR – By insisting that we stay tied to the customs union, Theresa May is acting as a fifth columnist for the Remain movement.

SIR – We are now on the way to a total, humiliating capitulation to all the EU wants, in denial of the referendum.

SIR – Theresa May has broken her word. As a lifelong Tory I am appalled that this will hasten a Labour government.

SIR – I am the daughter of a Lithuanian refugee. I take pride in living in a democracy and have voted in every election since I was 21. I am 76 now.

If Mrs May lets the Brexiteers down I will not vote Conservative in the next election, or Labour. For the first time in my life I will not vote at all.

Lesley Bull

Petersfield, Hampshire

SIR – Mrs May assures us we will be out of the customs union, but I believe she is incapable of taking hard decisions and that she unconsciously thinks she can keep on hedging until the matter somehow resolves itself.

Even if it leads to a general election, there should be a leadership challenge. The outcome of an election cannot be worse than being shackled to the EU, and punished by it, indefinitely. At least the public will still be able to vote out any government it does not like.

Mrs May’s lack of leadership is a catalyst for monumental political change, and the Conservative Party is sleep-walking into the wilderness.

Janet Payne

Paphos, Cyprus

SIR – Mrs May told us last year that no deal was better than a bad deal. Now her stance is that any deal, however bad, is better than no deal.

We should negotiate hard and stop submitting to EU diktats. Otherwise, there will be calls for Mrs May to be replaced, as we cannot believe what she says. The silent majority of Conservatives are becoming angry.
