Guernsey assisted dying bid rejected
♦ Assisted dying will not be legalised in Guernsey after politicians rejected proposals by 24 votes to 14.
Members of the legislature voted against a requete – similar to a private member’s Bill – proposed by Gavin St Pier, Guernsey’s chief minister.
Had it been approved, the island could have become the first place in the British Isles to allow assisted dying. Politicians did agree to review end-of-life care, as they said they anticipated a rise in healthcare needs for the island’s ageing population.
