Nine inmates, two guards die in Venezuelan jail riot

Nine prisoners and two guards were killed during a riot in a prison in Venezuela.

Iris Varela, the prisons minister, said the violence at Fenix jail in the western state of Lara took place on Thursday and was now under control.

It was the country’s second prison riot within a week, following a clash on Wednesday between inmates at the Helicoide prison complex in Caracas, where several prominent opponents of the government of Nicolas Maduro, the socialist president, are held. No one died in that incident.
