Data anxieties
SIR – As a coordinator of two voluntary groups and a member of several others, I’d like to thank Ian Statham for his letter (May 18) about the new General Data Protection Regulation.
I was told by someone who is employed to inform businesses about data protection matters that, under GDPR, I would need written permission to keep the names and addresses held for the groups on my computer. Having checked online at the Information Commissioner’s Office website, as Mr Statham suggested, I now know that I don’t have to. Janet Milliken

SIR – I am afraid Mr Statham is mistaken. While an organisation that processes data solely for recreational purposes may not need to register as a data controller and pay a fee, it will still need to comply with GDPR.
This is clear in the Information Commissioner’s guidance. Tim Wood
