Mystery ‘solved’ of who stole World Cup in 1966
The 52-year mystery of who stole the World Cup was said to have been solved last night after the nephew of a gangland robber said his uncle “nicked it for the thrill”.
Gary Cugullere and two other sources told the Daily Mirror that Sidney Cugullere, then aged 40, broke into the Methodist Central Hall in Westminster, central London, on March 20 1966 and ran off with the Jules Rimet Trophy, which was famously found by a dog, Pickles, a week later. Cugullere’s nephew said he confessed to family and close friends before he died of cancer in 2005.
