Best for Britain group to spend millions in bid to stop Brexit
A PRO-REMAIN campaign group is planning on spending millions in a bid to overturn Brexit and will seek to defeat Theresa May on her final agreement with Brussels, it was reported last night.
Best for Britain are launching a sixmonth advertising project that will seek to influence MPS’ final vote when the Prime Minister unveils her deal in October. Their operation, which is appealing for further funding from donors, declares there are “less than six months to stop Brexit”.
It is backed by George Soros, the billionaire known as the man who “broke the Bank of England”. Potential donors will start receiving a letter outlining details in the next few days, according to the Daily Mail.
The move will likely raise the blood pressure of leading Brexiteers, who have in the past have raised fears about wealthy donors undermining the will of the people who voted to leave the EU.
In February, The Telegraph disclosed that Best for Britain was hoping to force a second referendum on Brexit by influencing MPS on their final vote. Mr Soros’s involvement was also revealed, after he donated £400,000 through his Open Society foundation.
However, more details emerged last night about how it intends to go about its business, which reportedly includes using trade unions to change Labour’s stance on Brexit and upping its advertising campaign. Billboards have already sprung up around the country as part of the group’s efforts.
A Best for Britain spokesman said its aim as an organisation is to stop Brexit democratically, and that they had “never hidden our agenda”.
