What you need to know about the new law

-

Q What does GDPR mean for me?

A GDPR – General Data Protection Regulation – is designed to give consumers more control over how their personal data is shared and used. From today, businesses must be able to prove that the data they collect is relevant and for a specific purpose. It must also be accurate, secure and up to date.

Consumers now have the right to get clearer information about the data they are giving up and the right for that data to be forgotten, so privacy policies need to be written in plain English, not legal-speak.

Additionally, you will be able to see what data has been processed and will need to give active consent for your data to be taken.

If your data is breached, companies must inform users within a 72-hour deadline.

Q What should I do if I continue to receive spam?

A Email the company and ask it to stop and report the company to the Information Commissioner’s Office.

Q What should I do if I suspect I’ve received a phishing email?

A Do not reply to it if you suspect it in any way.

If a text message asks you to make a payment, or to log in to an online account or offers you a deal, be cautious and report it to Action Fraud.
