‘Best curry house in England’ fined over hygiene breaches
AN INDIAN restaurant that was named “England’s best curry house” has been convicted of food hygiene offences.
Bombay Spice in York was found guilty of four hygiene offences after customers were not informed that genetically modified soya oil was being used to prepare meals. York magistrates’ court also heard that food stores were not kept clean, staff did not have adequate hand-washing facilities and the restaurant did not display notices warning customers about foods it used that could cause allergies. The offences were committed in October 2017.
The year before, the restaurant and takeaway business won Restaurant of the Year in the English Curry Awards.
The company running the restaurant, Milos (York) Ltd, admitted four food hygiene breaches and its director, Mohammed Ali Akbar, 26, of Birmingham, admitted two.
Akbar has since improved cleaning regimes, renovated the kitchen and now has allergy notices up where staff and customers can see them.
Milos (York) Ltd was fined £800 with £700 prosecution costs and an £80 statutory surcharge. Akbar was fined £300 with a £30 statutory surcharge.
