Tube that prevents pneumonia in intensive care units
Pneumonia is the leading cause of hospitalacquired deaths in intensive care, often caused by bacteria entering the lungs through ventilation machines. Pneux is a cuffed ventilation tube that monitors patients and prevents bacteria reaching the lungs. Some studies suggest the device, which costs £330, could halve the rates of ventilator-acquired pneumonia, but only 11 intensive care units in England have invested in the technology.
