SIR – A judge has suggested that knives should be filed down in order to curb the number of stabbings (report, May 28).

I would point out that a carving fork would also make a good stabbing instrument, but, if rendered pointless, would be useless to the carver. Patrick Wroe

SIR – There was a time when home kitchens had two sharp knives: a carving knife and a smaller vegetable knife. Nowadays, kitchens are endowed with collection­s that would put many chefs to shame.

I blame the rise of the now ubiquitous “knife block”. Simon Olley
